Drug addiction is not a topic that I am deeply familiar with. In fact, I had heard about it, but I had never personally met anyone who suffered from it. The story is cleverly woven around characters like Romesh, Ranja, Balu, Neil, Pinky, and others – who have become drug addicts. The book is not written on impulse; it is clearly the result of deep research and direct understanding. In fact, I can confidently say that it is one of the most powerful and impactful books I have ever read.

I am usually drawn to mystery and thriller novels, so this was an unexpected but rewarding experience. Sick offers a raw, unfiltered look at the tragic lives of addicts and the manipulative systems that allow this menace to spread. It raised many questions for me: What is our prison system doing? What about religious institutions and government institutions? Are they blind to what the author has revealed? Or are they unwilling to act as they watch this monstrous octopus wrap its tentacles around every part of Sri Lankan society?

The book doesn’t just tell a story – it calls for action. It makes us think about the vulnerable youth who are most at risk. It asks us to ask: Where is the relief, the support, the guidance for them?

This is not just a book; it is a wake-up call. I recommend it to everyone, regardless of age or background. It is an eye-opener, a challenge to our conscience, and a testament to the power of informed storytelling.
